How the porn blocker works on iPhone and Android
The two platforms block porn sites by completely different mechanisms. Here is what each one actually does, what it can see, and what it cannot.
“Does it actually block anything, or does it just count days?” is the fair question to ask any app in this category, and the honest answer for IronWill is different on each platform. Here is exactly what happens.
On iPhone and iPad
IronWill does not run its own filter. It uses Apple’s Screen Time web content
filter, through the same APIs Apple built for parental controls
(FamilyControls and ManagedSettings).
This matters for three reasons:
- It covers every browser. The filter sits below the browser, at the system level, so Safari, Chrome, Firefox and in-app browsers are all covered. A blocker implemented as a Safari extension is not.
- There is no list to maintain. Apple’s adult-content category is maintained by Apple and stays current without you or us updating anything.
- We never see your browsing. The filtering decision happens on your device inside Apple’s system process. IronWill is not told which sites you visited, which means we could not hand that data over even if someone asked.
Turning it on is an in-app Screen Time permission prompt, not a trip into Settings.
On Android
Android has no equivalent of Apple’s system filter, so the mechanism is different: IronWill registers an accessibility service that watches for browser navigation and blocks matching pages.
Two honest consequences:
- The permission looks alarming, and should. Accessibility services are powerful, and Android warns you accordingly. We disclose this use in all 28 Play Store listings because Google requires it and because you deserve to know before you tap accept.
- It still runs entirely on your device. The service inspects navigation locally to decide whether to block. Nothing about your browsing is uploaded.
What neither platform can do
No blocker on a phone is a wall. Someone determined enough can uninstall the app, use another device, or reset the phone. Anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.
What a blocker is good for is removing the ten-second decision — the gap between an urge and a tab, where most relapses actually happen. Turning that ten seconds into several minutes of deliberate effort is the entire mechanism, and it is a real one. It is not the same as making the thing impossible, and we would rather say so.
If you are mid-craving right now
The blocker is a wall you build in advance, not a tool for the moment itself. For the moment itself, IronWill’s emergency mode has breathing, grounding and a sixty-second lock — and the ten techniques are all designed to work on the body rather than on willpower, because willpower is precisely what you have least of right then.
